Henry Etta Horton

September 27, 1931 — January 15, 2013

When Henry Etta was born on September 27, 1931, she was blessed with God fearing parents Sam and Ietta Mitchell Horton who, by example, taught Christian values, integrity and ingenuity that resulted in a solid and caring family environment. Her parents were highly respected among friends and neighbors in the Curtis Community. She confessed her faith in Christ at a tender age where she united with Mt. Friendship Baptist Church. She attended and received her high school diploma from Peake High School. Henry Etta loved learning and continued her studies at Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock, Arkansas where she excelled as a student. Henry Etta grew up to be a beautiful and intelligent young woman. Henry Etta was employed as a dietician in both St. Louis, Missouri and Chicago, Illinois and culminated her career as an employee of the United State Postal Service In 1992, Henry Etta retired and moved back to Arkadelphia where she united with Greater Pleasant Hill Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Ron Browning. She was a faithful and dedicated member having served with the Senior Saints and the WMU. Although she had no children of her own, to her nieces and nephews, Henry Etta was like a loving and nurturing mother. A naturally friendly person, she was there for her family like a best friend. Henry Etta was a rare “rich gift” who inspired everyone who crossed her path. She possessed her own style and loved music, particularly gospel. Her words of wisdom were “whatever you do in life, be the best that you can be.” After 80 seasons of life she received her blessing of immortality on Tuesday, January 15, 2013, with Sam, Donald and Jerry by her side. She was welcomed home by her parents, her brother Maurice (2010), and her sister-in-law Bernis (2011). She leaves to celebrate and honor her life’s journey: Her siblings Samuel Horton and Donald Horton both of Curtis, Arkansas, Mattie (Floyd) Armstrong of Chicago, IL, Jerry Horton of McKinney, TX, and Barbara (Clarence) Smith of Wichita, Kansas. She also leaves her sister-in-law, Katryne S. Horton of Pine Bluff, AR, James (Lorene) Goza of Kansas City, MO, Patricia Jones of Indianapolis, IN, a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, countless friends and the Greater Pleasant Hill Baptist Church family. Visitation will be Friday from 12 noon until 6:30 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.at the funeral home. The last farewell will be held on Saturday January 19th at 11:00 a.m. at Greater Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Dr. Lewis A. Shepherd, Jr., as the celebrant. The body will lie in repose one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Ietta Horton Memorial Scholarship at Henderson State University. The committal service and final resting place will be in Mt. Friendship Cemetery in Curtis, Arkansas.
