Vendercea Lock Amos

October 8, 1928 — March 22, 2015

Mrs. Vendercea Lock Amos was born on October 8, 1928 in Sparkman, Arkansas to Julia Williams Hunter and Ira Lock. She was the oldest of three sisters, Oradell, Delores, and Versie. She always loved her sisters and had fun loving memories growing up with them. She was united in holy matrimony in 1950 to Mr. R.B. Amos and they remained married until his death in 1967. They shared a loving, caring daughter, Venderine Amos Jones. The young couple later relocated to Memphis, Tennessee where Vendercea spent the majority of her adulthood. Her gift was caring for others and she was part of two families during her time in Memphis. Fred and Leslie Bugg and their daughter Reagan will remember her fondly. Affectionately known as Bigmama, she was a mother to many always opening her home to friends who enjoyed her wonderful cooked meals and cakes and pies. She was a devoted Christian and active in her church, Greater Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Memphis, TN. Everyone waited to see what Ms. Vendercea would wear as they knew it would be fabulous and an amazing hat would surely complete her ensemble. A church pew at Greater Pleasant was dedicated in her honor and remains there today. She relocated to Houston, Texas in 2010 to spend more time with her daughter and granddaughter, Kimberly and great granddaughter, MacKenzie. There she embarked on a new chapter and had more “children” who came to love her and adopted her as their “mom”. She will be remembered as a wonderful sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt and friend who exuded the classic style and grace of her era. She is survived by her daughter, Venderine Jones (Fred), granddaughter, Kimberly Jones Williams, granddaughter, MacKenzie Reign Williams, Houston Texas and nieces Faye Gleason Turner (Bobby), Joyce Gleason Perry, and Doris Gleason of Arkadelphia, Arkansas and a host of cousins and friends. Services commemorating her life will be held at Piney Grove AME Church on Saturday, March 28, 2015, at 3pm with Presiding Elder James H. Giles, Sr. Burial will follow at the Piney Grove Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Friday, March 27, 2015 from 2:00pm-5:00pm. The family will receive friends from 5-6pm. Submitted by the Amos Family
