Lois Mitchell Thomas

January 28, 1923 — November 15, 2015

Lois Mitchell Thomas was born January 28, 1923 in the Greenville Community of Arkadelphia, Arkansas to the late Sally and Seabe Mitchell. She confessed her faith in Christ at an early age and was baptized at Antioch Baptist Church in the Richmond Hill Community where she also attended school through the 10th grade. At the age of 20, Lois met and married James Stewart in 1943. They became proud parents of one daughter. The family relocated to Richmond, California where Lois worked in the shipyard industry as a spot welder. A short time before gaining better employment as an embosser with St. Regis Paper Company where she retired after 27 years. Lois, being a country girl at heart, had a wide range of interest. She was a homemaker, a gardener, a fisher (lady), a deer hunter and socialite. She was known for her creative cakes and fried pies. She was known in the family as “Sugar Babe”. She was known for and her home was the talk of the neighbor"HOOD" for her oven baked chitterlings and hot water cornbread. Lois was a warm and beautiful soul who loved the world and never met a stranger; full of fun and fairness. She had many friends; actually, her home was filled with all of the ingredients for having a “mighty fun time.” After retirement, she returned to her home in Arkadelphia, Arkansas to spend her late years with her daughter, son-in-law, grandson, sisters and their families while reconnecting with other relatives and friends. At the ripe age of 92.10 years young the sun began to set. Even though she was growing tired, she continued to display unimaginable strength in providing an example of what we can accomplish with a sound mind and determination. She was totally independent until the end. The sunset for Lois on November 15, 2015, peacefully at her home in Arkadelphia, Arkansas with an embraced rest into her daughter’s arms as her Savior carried her off into His heavenly arms. Lois Mitchell Thomas was preceded in death by her parents, Sallie and Seabe Mitchell, her brother Otis Mitchell, and her sisters, Berta McClure, Christine Preston and Adella Murchison. Lois leave to cherish her legacy of a love filled life: a devoted daughter, Helena Van Buren of Little Rock, AR; son-in-law, Mitchell Van Buren of Little Rock, AR; grandson, Sean Gayles of Little Rock, AR; great-granddaughter, Brisean Gales of Las Vegas, NV; great-grandson, Christian Young of Las Vegas, NV; special cousins, Mike Starks (Peggy) of Hot Springs, AR; Lucy Ross of Arkadelphia, AR; and a host of nieces, nephews and numerous other relatives and friends unnamed, but no less special and dear.
