Lula Mae Roberts

February 24, 1932 — March 5, 2010

In the beginning there were ten beautiful Washington blossoms, God selected six full grown flowers: Lorece, W.A., Willie, Gurnell, C.V. and Charles. As God was walking in His Garden Friday, March 5, 2010, He searched throughout the lands for another one of His beautiful Washington blossoms made by His own hands. He found and selected a full grown flower that was ready for the harvest, which had such a sweet spirit that filled this place. Now, that leaves three beautiful Washington blossoms made by God’s own hands. On February 24, 1932, Willie Ed and Alice McCoy Washington bore their third child, Lula Mae Washington in rural Prescott, Nevada County, Arkansas commonly known as the St. Mark and Sweet Home communities. After Willie Ed began working at the Berine Mill, he packed up his family and moved to Berine, Arkansas. Lula attended the Beirne and Bell High Schools. On July 14, 1951, Lula married Ivory Roberts Sr. This marked the beginning of the “Uncle Bo & Aunt Lula” legacy. They united with the former Mt. Zion and now New Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Aunt Lula served on the usher board and was a member of the Willing Workers Mission. On Tuesday, December 23, 1986 and after 35 years of marriage, Uncle Bo released his pleasant spirit to God. Aunt Lula remained a faithful member under the spiritual leadership of several pastors: Rev. Raymond Green, Rev. David Walters, Rev. Quintin Radford and Rev. William Colbert. On July 20, 2008, she united with the Kingdom Authority Ministries under the spiritual leadership of Pastor Quintin C. Radford. Aunt Lula hired a friend to teach her how to drive. Not only did she pass both parts of her driver’s test, but she drove herself to work for 24 years (1986 – 2010). She worked as a custodian for the Gurdon Hospital, Gurdon Plywood Plant, Higgs Lumber Mill, Gurdon Primary and Cabe Middle Schools. On April 9, 1999, she received special recognition of appreciation for ten years of service from the Arkansas Human Development Center in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. She worked her last day at the Gurdon Clark County Head Start March 4, 2010 as a Foster Grandparent. On Friday, March 5, 2010, she decided to take a day off from laboring just to lie down and rest a little before the 7:00 p.m. Los Angeles Lakers game against the Charlotte Bobcats. At 3:00 p.m., Aunt Lula called and conversed with her Best friend, Myrtle Bates. They talked until Rommie beeped in at 3:30 p.m. Aunt Lula didn’t answer either of Myrtle’s phone calls at 5:00 p.m. or at 8:00 p.m. Aunt Lula didn’t watch the 7:00 basketball game with her favorite team, the Lakers, loosing to the Bobcats 83 to 98. Aunt Lula didn’t make the routine Friday evening call to her niece, Shelia Butler. Upon arriving at Aunt Lula’s home Saturday morning, March 6, 2010, Myrtle Bates noticed that Aunt Lula had not picked up her morning newspaper. Now we understand that Aunt Lula was tired and decided to lie down to rest for just a little while. Aunt Lula left so many precious and unforgettable memories for two sisters: Georgia Washington of Ontario, CA and Elizabeth Washington of Los Angeles; one brother: Billy Washington of Gurdon, AR; Two of whom she called her sons: Ivory (Moe) Roberts Jr. of Hope, AR and Rommie Moss of Los Angeles, CA; Three nieces, for whom she leaned on for comfort and strength: Tammy Moore of Los Angeles, CA; Shelia Butler of Prescott, AR; Joyce Stitt of Texarkana, AR; one aunt: O’ree Simmons of Prescott, AR; one brother-in-law: Lester Livingston of Chicago, IL; Two traveling friends: Myrtle Bates and Minnie Dennis of Gurdon, AR; two spiritual adopted children, Truman and Clai Hall of North Little Rock, AR; and a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, who she loved so deeply. Lovingly submitted by the Roberts Family. Mrs. Roberts will lie in state Saturday, March 13, 2010, 12 noon until 7:00 p.m. The Roberts Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. A rejoicing service celebrating her new life will be held on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of Kingdom Authority Outreach Ministries where Rev. Quintin Radford is the pastor and will preach the celebration message. The committal and final resting place will be at Sweet Home Cemetery in Prescott, Arkansas. Bearers of the casket will be Rommie Moss, Lester Livingston Jr., Kelvin Payne, Channing Butler, Muhammad Palmer, Jonathan Gulley, Jason Butler, Corenzia Wilkerson and John Blue.
