Willie B. Russey

On May 2, 1927, a baby boy was born in Burtsell, Arkansas; he was named Willie B. Russey. The proud parents were Archie and Tessola Russey. Willie B. being nurtured in a Christian environment united with St. Clair Baptist Church at a young age. He later joined New Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Gurdon. He was very active having served as chairman of the deacon board and as an usher. He was a veteran of the Southwest District Association having served as the chairman of the Laymen of Section One A-Division and an original member of the A-Division choir. Deacon Russey was a stalwart servant and regular attendee of all district functions. On March 31, 1980 believing God’s Word, “….and the two shall become one flesh….” he married the beautiful and sweet Vernessa Bell. He was a laborer for the International Paper Company. He was a devoted and committed husband, father, loving grandfather, great-grandfather, faithful & trusted friend. On Saturday, April 24, 2010, as he slept he answered the call and now rests in the arms of Jesus. During all of his 82 seasons, he made several friends; he freely offered wise counsel, gave generously to those in need and inspired everyone who crossed his path. Deacon Russey was welcomed home by his parents, all of his siblings and a son Donnie Russey. His life could never be duplicated, and his influence will live on in the lives of his loving wife, Vernesa Russey, his children, Mable Henry of Gurdon, AR, Willie (James) Booker of Desoto, TX, Roy Terry Lyons of Hot Springs, AR, Ivory, Jr. (deborah) Roberts of Hope, AR, and George Golden of Desoto, TX; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, numerous friends, and the New Mt. Zion Baptist Church family. Deacon Russey will lie in state from 12 noon until 7:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. The last farewell will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at New Mt. Zion Baptist Church where Rev. William Colbert is the pastor and will preach the message. The committal service and final resting place will be in Burtsell Community Cemetery. Bearers of the casket will be Jeremy Williams, Connie Williams, Wallace Middleton, William Colbert, Jr., Michael Crow, Andy Bell and Calvin Russell.
