Annie Bess Hill

December 12, 1926 — October 18, 2018

Annie Bess Brown Hill was born into this life on December 12, 1926, to Dona and Maude Eva McNeal Brown in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Annie accepted Christ at a tender age and was a life-long member of St. Paul AME Church. Over the years she was a member of the sanctuary choir, served as a stewardess, as an usher and worked in the kitchen.

She attended the historic Peake High School. She married the handsome Willie B. Hill and to his union 13 children were born. They were married for 47 years until his passing on Sunday, January 5, 1992. In raising 13 children cooking came naturally. She was a soul food “boiling pots” cooking type of woman. Her sweet bread and butter rolls were an all-time favorite and specialty.

Annie Bess was often called “Twisty Mama” because her very feminine and trademark walk. She had her own sense of style and fashion. Her favorite color was red and she would never be caught without her long black hair and shades. She enjoyed listening to gospel music, but found a love for country western music.

She greeted family and friends with a big smile and warm hug. Her home was the center for family gatherings and her front porch was the meeting place where wise counsel was offered and advice given. She often encouraged her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to “do right”. She preached loved and forgiveness while having no room in her life for drama and mess.

Annie Bess lived a full 91 years as a living example and testament of God’s grace. On Thursday, October 18, 2018, she passed from this life to live again in eternity. She was preceded in passing by her husband, Willie B. Hill (1992); two sons, Larry Hill (1950) and Robert Hill (2017); two daughters, Martha Hill (1991) and Willie Mae Hill (2009); sisters, Margaret Simmons, Jewel Williams, Rosietta Holliman and Flossie Summerville.

She leaves a legacy of five daughters, Virginia Jefferson of Arkadelphia, Mattie McClure of Curtis, AR, Brenda (Ricky) Govan of Arkadelphia, Tammy Zambrana of Arkadelphia, and Melissa (Dale) Box of Arkadelphia; five sons, Glenn, Sr. (Gloria) Hill of Gum Springs, AR, Tommie Hill of Arkadelphia, Gary (Janice) Hill of Gurdon, AR, Rodney (Carolyn) Hill of Gurdon, AR and Kenneth (Tanya) Walker of Arkadelphia; five sisters, Francis Middleton of Arkadelphia, Hazel Bailey of Arkadelphia, Joetta (John) Tatum of Arkadelphia, Eva Hill of Arkadelphia, and Melva J.
