James Murphy Henry

James Murphy Henry, a cherished resident of Gurdon, Arkansas passed on Monday, June 24, 2024, at Baptist Health Medical Center in North Little Rock. His nick-name to many was “Grouch” or “Brown Eyes”. He was born on May 6, 1921, in Strong, Arkansas to the union of Owen Henry and Roberta Ross Henry. At the age of 103 years, James lived a remarkable life that touched the hearts of many.

In 1941, he married the pretty Berdie Lee Turner, and they were blessed with seven children. 

He served his country with honor in the Army during World War II, enlisting on October 9, 1942, and receiving an honorable discharge on November 15, 1945. His dedication and sacrifice to his country will always be remembered.

Throughout his life, James worked diligently as a laborer in the manufacturing industry, employed by Frezell Lumber Company for 12 years. Despite his 8th-grade education, he was known for his strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his family.

“Grouch” enjoyed listening to blues, hunting, and raising hogs. He would spend hours with family and friends having charismatic conversations and laughs about any and everything. As he aged he made close bonds with a special nephew, Dorsey Henry; a special bonus son, Al “Dino” Morris and special grandsons, Cameron House, Michael Turner, and Earvin Barnes, a special cousin, Randy Hicks and his caretake Angie Henry.

His independent spirit, iron will and strong character will never be duplicated. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Berdie; his children, Nettie Chambliss, Julius Henry, and Lonnie Henry; his siblings, Willie Johnson, Woody Henry, JD Henry, John M. Henry, MB Henry, Laddie Henry, Glemerine Henry Browning Kountz, Eugene Henry, and Dometrice Henry.

He leaves behind his beloved daughter and caregiver, Sandra (AL “Dino”) Henry Morris of Arkadelphia; his children, Dora (Jim) Hennancy of Pasadena, CA, Bettye (Willie) Turner of Pasadena, CA, Rickey Henry of Memphis, TN, Jackie Johnson of Ft. Worth, TX and Lorene Charles of El Dorado, AR; a bonus son, Johnny Lee Henry, a daughter-in-law, Shirley Henry of Little Rock, AR; his brother, Abraham Henry of Flint, MI; twenty-four grandchildren, thirty-three great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. 

He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and close friends, Martha Charles and Doris Gulley.

In celebration of his life and the impact he had on those around him, homegoing services s to honor his legacy will be held on at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at St. Paul AME Church with Rev. TW Scott, officiant and Rev. Rickey Hicks, eulogist. He will be laid to rest with military honors at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Arkadelphia.

As we gather to pay our respects, let us remember “Grouch” for the love and kindness he shared, the sacrifices he made, and the lasting impact he left on all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his memory live on in our hearts for years to come.

Pallbearers will be Cameron House, Gavin House, Adrian Morris, Dorian Henry, Michael Bell, Jr., Adrian Henry, Earvin Barnes, Michael Turner, and Lonnie Henry, Jr, Honorary pallbearers will be Dorsey Henry, Johnny Henry, Johnny L. Henry, Jeff Henry, Henry Harper and Otis Henry.
