On the first day January, 1940, a precious jewel was born into the world. Juanita Hickman Carter was born to Robert Ramey, Sr and Piedy Howard Ramey, beginning a life that would become a shining example of love.
Juanita was lovingly raised by family member, Wanda Hickman, who poured into her a wealth of love, wisdom, and affection. Wanda taught her the golden rule — to treat others as she desired to be treated — a lesson Juanita carried with her throughout her entire life. Her kindness and nurturing spirit became the hallmark and legacy of who she was.
Juanita graduated in 1958 from Lincoln High School, and studied business at Pine Bluff AM&N College (currently the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff). She valued education, community, and faith, and she remained deeply connected.
A lifelong member of St. James AME Church, Juanita faithfully served in the choir and found joy in praising God through song. Her favorite gospel songs included, “Amazing Grace” and “Ain’t it sweet to know”. She married Frank "Raymond" Carter in 1966 and to this union Angela was born.
Juanita was truly “a mother to all.” Her home, on the Northside of Camden, was a place of comfort, laughter, and refuge for countless children. She never turned anyone away and always made sure every child who came through her doors was cared for. Whether making certain knees were lotioned and no longer ashy, hair was neatly combed, or stomachs were full, Juanita mothered an entire neighborhood with tenderness and love.
She was a natural-born caregiver who found joy in sewing, cooking, and caring for those around her. Many will forever cherish memories of waking to the smell of her famous thick homemade biscuits, plum jelly, and oatmeal. Her kitchen was a place where hearts were comforted and souls were fed.
On Saturday, May 23, 2026, Juanita peacefully entered eternal rest, leaving behind cherished memories.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert, Sr. and Piedy; her devoted mother, Wanda Hickman; her beloved husband, Frank Carter; her daughter, Angela Scott; grandson, Corey Hickman; her siblings, Levonia Williams, Maple Ramey, Elmer Ramey, Sr., Betty Lee Ramey, Willie Ray Ramey, Joshua Ramey, Robert Ramey, Jr., Edward L. Ramey, Eunivira Kittrell, Leon Ramey, Johnnie Ramey, Nettie Ramey, and Samuel Ramey.
Leaving to cherish her precious memories are her loving children: Wanda Murphy Bryant of Little Rock, Arkansas; Legar Hickman, Thelma Hickman, Ronnie Charles (Jeanette) Hickman, all of Camden, Arkansas; twelve grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Carlene Caliste of Albuquerque, NM, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and the many friends and neighbors of the Northside community whose lives she touched so deeply.
