Mattie J. Horton Armstrong

June 30, 1941 — May 3, 2020

When Mattie J. Horton was born on June 30, 1941, she was blessed with God fearing parents Sam and Ietta Mitchell Horton who, by example, taught Christian values, integrity and ingenuity that resulted in a solid and caring family environment. Her parents were highly respected among friends and neighbors in the Curtis Community.

She confessed her faith in Christ at a tender age where she united with Mt. Friendship Baptist Church. She attended and received her high school diploma from Peake High School. She continued her studies at AM&N College in Pine Bluff, Arkansas where she excelled as a student. Mattie grew up to be a beautiful and intelligent young woman.

Mattie was an educator at A. C. Sexton Elementary School in Chicago, IL. During this time, she studied at National Lewis Institute at Chicago State Campus where she earned a masters degree in teaching. At A.C. Sexton she received numerous awards and certificates.

Matie J. was a rare “rich gift” who inspired everyone who crossed her path. She possessed her own style and loved enjoying the things life offered. She married Floyd A. Armstrong and they shared over four decades together, throughout which Floyd remained devoted and dedicated husband.

After 79 seasons of life she received her blessing of immortality on Sunday, May 3, 2020. She was welcomed home by her parents; her sister, Henry Etta (2013); two brothers, Maurice (2010) and Samuel, Sr. (2013) and her sister-in-law Bernis (2011).

She leaves to celebrate and honor her life’s journey: her husband, Floyd; two step-sons, Kevin and Dereal (Valerie) of Decatur, GA; her siblings, Barbara Smith of Wichita, Kansas, Jerry Horton of McKinney, TX, and Donald Horton of Curtis, Arkansas. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
